Originally constructed in 1911, the three-story building, encompassing 40,000 square feet, was the home of Birmingham’s first department store, Yeilding’s. To be named The Yeilding, the building is set to be redeveloped for mixed-use, incorporating both residential and commercial spaces. The planned project will feature up to 9,000 square feet of ground-level, mezzanine and lower level commercial space, and 40 Class-A finished residential units with 15-foot ceiling heights and floor-to-ceiling windows. The Yeilding is located in the heart of Birmingham’s Loft District, which has become one of the city’s main culinary destinations, in addition to an area for nightlife and for historic buildings rehabilitated to create modern residences.
